WE ARE ONE

The end and the biggest event for PYP students is PYP Exhibition, which will be held in this upcoming May 2017. We will show our journey of learning in this PYP Exhibition. Our preparation for PYP Exhibition started in August. We were put into different groups. And I have Adinda and Filbert as my group mates.
Our group topic is the rights to ‘Practice own Religion, Culture. Language.’ We have searched some information. In this topic, we found out that one of the problems is discrimination. What’s discrimination? Discrimination means unjust or prejudicial treatment of different categories of people or things, especially on the grounds of race, age or sex. Why is there racial discrimination? According to biologist, there is only one race - the human race. Yet everywhere, men and woman discriminate against others who they think are different from themselves- in ethnic origins, nationality, language, skin colour or membership of clan or tribe.
This is one of the countries who has discrimination, United States. Although the United States has come all long way since the days of slavery and huge steps were made towards granting equal rights on the basis of race in the 1960s, racism is still a very pressing problem in the US today. Sometimes it is blatant and open, but often it can be more subtle, or even built into the system, as seen by racial profiling by law enforcement officers and other government officials and the near impossibility for some groups, especially African Americans, to break the cycle of poverty.
Discrimination policies in schools lead to the socalled “school-to-prison pipeline.” Due to zero-tolerance policies in schools, disadvantaged black youths quickly end up being pushed out of school and into the juvenile and criminal justice systems, counselling.
It happenned to in Indonesia too. Zulfa Nur Rohman, a student at a vocational public school in Semarang, Central Java, failed the 11th grade because of his religious faith. School administrators informed Zulfa, an adherent of a Javanese traditional faith Hayu Ningrat, that he cannot continue on to grade 12 because he refused to participate in “the practice of reading the Quran and performing prayer” in a mandatory Islamic studies class. Zulfa is a victim of the pernicious and routine bureaucratic discrimination against religious minorities in Indonesia. Indonesia’s 1965 blasphemy law permits only six officially protected religions: Islam, Protestantism, Catholicism, Hinduism, Buddhism and Confucianism. But government statistics indicate that Indonesia has 245 native religions with more than 400,000 adherents.
They are victims of regulations that discriminate against religious minorities, ranging from the provision of official identification cards, birth and marriage certificates, religious education and access to other government services. Like all parents in Indonesia, Zulfa’s parents had to register his faith when enrolling him in kindergarten. Because Hayu Ningrat was not an official permitted option, they opted to register him as a Muslim. School officials contended that Zulfa’s official identification as a Muslim obligated him to fully participate in his Islamic studies class and that his refusal to do so required him to repeat 11th grade, including Islamic studies. Zulfa always did the non-practicing studies until grade 11 when he was asked to pray and to recite the shahada.
Indonesian government policies have encourage discriminatory religious teaching in the country’s public school system. Then, the late President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in 2007 issued a government regulation that placed religious education under the domain of the Ministry of Religious Affairs. It gave the ministry parity with the Ministry of Education in formulating educational policy. Yudhoyono also introduced a requirement that all schools, both public and private must provide devotional education in the six officially recognized religious from kindergarten to university. That directive automatically excluded minority religious such as Zulfa’s Hayu Ningrat.
So discrimination is a big problem, it is not only happening in United States and Indonesia but all around the world. We breathe same air, we step on same ground and it trains us how to tolerate others. God creates us to live in peaceful. World and we need to train ourselves to tolerate and respect one another.

Trip to SDN 03 Rasau Jaya II and Kasih Bapa Orphanage
Written by: Adinda Shafiyah
On 6th April 2017, P6 students went to SDN 03 Rasau Jaya II and Kasih Bapa Orphanage. Before we went there, we prepared things. We asked for donations from grade 1 to grade 6. We collected it, sorted it out, wrapped and packed them. We also prepared an information board, a video for us to present it in SDN 03 Rasau Jaya.
First, we went to SDN 03 Rasau Jaya II. We went there by bus. The distance between our school and their school is quite far. It took around one hour to get there. When we arrived there, we were warmly greeted by the teachers and the students. We went to a room where some of the teachers and the principal of the school gave some speech and introduced us to their school. In there, they gave us corn, some cakes and water we were very thankful.
Our principal and PYP Coordinator also gave short speech about how thankful they are for them (SDN 03’ students ad teachers) who are willingly to have us there to help us to do our PYP Exhibition. After that, each of us went to the class where were going to present. As for my group, we presented the topic ‘Practice Own Religion, Culture(s), and Languages(s). We presented it to the P6 students there.
We prepared a video about the diversity in Indonesia under the theme ‘Bhinneka Tunggal Ika’, a phrase in Old Javanese translated as ‘Unity in Diversity’
We recorded our juniors while they’re learning religion. We recorded them when they’re doing their praying. We also recorded some of our teachers to speak their mother tongue. They talked about how we could respect others although they have different religion, cultures or languages with us.
We also presented some issues that are connected to our topic, and how can we solve it. We also talked about children’ rights and of course, our responsibilities too. After presenting and showing them the video, we asked them to draw about the diversity in Indonesia. The result of their drawing is quite nice too. I learned that not all of the children’ right is fulfilled. They don’t really have an appropriate place to study considering that their school building haven’t been renovated since a long time ago. They can’t really afford buying stationary for their school supplies and all. After presenting it, we went to that same room again, and we said our thank you(s) and goodbyes. At that time, I showed my communicator skill, because when it’s my part to present, I did it without any mistake.
After that, we went to Tanggooe to have our lunch. In Tanggooe, we got our meals that we ordered the day before. We also ordered some other meals using our own money because we’re, somehow, still hungry.
After our lunch, we headed to Kasih Bapa Orphanage. When we’re arrived there, the owner of the orphanage greeted us. We gave our donations to them. We also introduced our names one by one. Same goes to the orphans there. They also gave us a tour around the orphanage. We learned that not all of their children’ rights is fulfilled. They don’t have their privacy. They can’t have all the things that they want or need and many others. In there, we took pictures with them too. After our visit to the orphanage we went back to our school.
I learnt that not all children in this world could get what they need, wants, and rights. I also think that I should be more grateful about what I have because there are much more people that can’t even get their rights fulfilled and the love that they needed.
Thank You

We were led to the meeting room. We’ve been served corn and getuk lindri, All students in each classes got gift too. Such as books, pencils, pens and eraser. Before that we present our topic which is 'Practice Own Religion, Culture and Language' to the P6 students there. Then we went back to the bus. After we visited SDN 03 Rasau Jaya, we went to Tanggooe to have a lunch there.
It took an hour to go to Tanggooe. We ate fried rice, pizza, some delicious drinks and also french fries. After we done eating, we go back to the bus and went to the Kaih Bapa Orphanage. It took 30 minutes from Tanggooe. We took all the donation and we gave it to the orphanage. We introduced our self and we had tour around the orphanage. We also took pictures together. There were 4 dogs and they are so cute. I even hugged one of them. When we're done, We say our thank you(s) to them and we headed home.
Reflection: I realized that the orphans have much harder life and I felt sad. I learnt that I'm so lucky that I live with a family that love me, take care of me and raise me very well. The attitude that I improve is communicator, because I can present well in front of the P6 students in SDN 03 Rasau Jaya and i can communicate well with the orphans.
